Our measurements are based on your device's microphone and are meant to provide approximate dB levels. For professional-grade accuracy, we recommend calibrating your device using a known sound source or a professional sound level meter. The app provides a calibration tool in the Settings menu.
You can export all your data from the app by going to Profile → Export Data. Your data will be downloaded in your chosen format (JSON or CSV). This is your right under HIPAA regulations.
In the app, go to Profile → Settings → Delete Account and enter your password to confirm. If you no longer have the app installed, use our account deletion page and confirm by email. Either way, your personal data is permanently deleted within 30 days, and you can cancel during that window. Anonymized research data that has already been contributed cannot be linked back to you and is retained.
Yes. We use industry-standard AES-256 encryption for all health data both at rest and in transit. We are fully HIPAA compliant and maintain comprehensive audit logs of all data access. See our HIPAA Notice for more details.
When enabled, the app periodically measures ambient noise levels using your device's microphone. On Android, this runs as a foreground service with a notification. On iOS, it uses background audio capabilities. You can disable this at any time in Settings.
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) sets exposure limits for workplace noise. Their recommended limit is 85 dBA for 8 hours. For every 3 dB increase, the safe exposure time is cut in half. HearingApp uses these standards to calculate your daily noise dose.
